Shapewear is an investment — and how you care for it directly determines how long it keeps delivering results. Compression fibres are delicate; the wrong wash cycle, temperature, or drying method can permanently damage them. Here’s how to keep your shapewear performing like new.
The Golden Rules of Shapewear Care
- ✅ Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent whenever possible
- ✅ Machine wash on a delicate/gentle cycle in a mesh laundry bag if hand washing isn’t practical
- ✅ Lay flat or hang to dry — never tumble dry
- ✅ Store flat — not folded or compressed
- ❌ Never tumble dry — heat destroys elastane and latex fibres permanently
- ❌ Never bleach — bleach degrades compression fabric
- ❌ Never iron — heat damages the compression structure
- ❌ Never use fabric softener — it coats compression fibres and reduces elasticity
Washing by Fabric Type
Nylon-Spandex (Seamless Shapewear, Bodysuits, Shaping Shorts)
The most common shapewear fabric. Hand wash in cool water with a gentle detergent, or machine wash on a delicate cycle at 30°C maximum. Lay flat to dry. Do not wring — gently press out excess water with a towel.
Latex & Neoprene (Waist Trainers, Workout Belts)
Wipe down with a damp cloth after each use. For a deeper clean, hand wash in cool water with a very small amount of mild soap. Never submerge latex in water for extended periods. Air dry completely before storing — never store damp, as this causes mould and deterioration.
Medical-Grade Powernet (Fajas Colombianas)
Hand wash only in cool water with a gentle detergent. Powernet is robust but the hook-and-eye closures can snag other garments in a machine wash. Lay flat to dry. Check that all hooks are fully dry before storing to prevent rust.
Silicone (Adhesive Push-Up Bras)
After each wear, rinse the adhesive cups under warm water with a small amount of mild soap. Gently rub to remove skin oils and residue. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry completely before replacing the protective film. Never use alcohol-based cleaners — they degrade the silicone adhesive.
How Often Should You Wash Shapewear?
- Everyday shapewear (bodysuits, shorts, thongs): After every 1–2 wears
- Waist trainers worn during workouts: After every wear — sweat accelerates fabric degradation if left unwashed
- Fajas and abdominal binders: Every 2–3 days during postpartum recovery
- Adhesive bras: After every wear
How to Make Your Shapewear Last Longer
- Rotate between two pieces: Alternating between two garments gives each one time to recover its elasticity between wears
- Put it on correctly: Step into shapewear from the bottom and pull up gradually — never yank or stretch aggressively
- Remove jewellery: Rings and bracelets can snag and tear compression fabric
- Store flat in a drawer: Avoid hanging shapewear — gravity stretches the fabric over time
- Keep away from direct sunlight: UV light degrades elastane and latex fibres
When to Replace Your Shapewear
With proper care, quality shapewear lasts 6–12 months of regular wear. Signs it’s time to replace:
- The waistband rolls down consistently during wear
- The fabric has lost its firmness and feels loose
- Visible pilling, thinning, or holes in the compression fabric
- The garment no longer provides the smoothing or support it once did
